In a western world that is waging war (politically, economically and physically) in many Islamic nations, there is one factor in this debate that is being clearly omitted. That is the economic situation and the festering resentment it fosters.
The Western Imperial Industrial Complex cares little about culture or religion as it engulfs the world, trampling and bastardising everything in its sight in the name of profit. This is the economic background we are in, it is the global order which all of us are now subjected to. From the first world to the third, we all have different perspectives on how this order influences us. So how does this relate to the Anti-Muslim video?
The first phenomenon we saw as a response to the video was the uproar in the middle east and other Islamic Nations. Well, if we look at the world, many Islamic nations are still in the third world thanks to the West. As the West subjugates and denigrates the Middle East, many of the people have little to hang on to a part from their religion and world views with limited access to education, free thinking etc. So to them (no fault of their own) Islam is everything, it is their entire world and rightfully so. It is not like the West has anything else to offer apart from further deprivation and poverty. Now you add the internet into the mix, most of the west can look at that clip and think critically about it, adding a Western context to it… however those in the third world do not have the same context , they dont have the exposure to the Western World, so to them it is so disgusting and needs to be acted upon.
Furthermore, the messages behind the film are actually very disturbing. They have successfully taken everything sacred in Islam and insulted it, flipping the entire prophet on its head and destroying it, in their eyes it’s extremely blasphemous, and I am offended for them. No mater who you are, you do not deserve that sort of belittlement of your views or religion.
So contextually there is a huge difference… we think erghhh another stupid youtube video… but in their eyes they see a western company (YouTube), promiting hatred against their religion, it is not that hard to see the connections.
This is not a racial issue, those who wish to view it as such are greatly misunderstood. It is contextual and economic. If you insulted my views I would have the same anger.
In the interests of peace and turning something negative into a positive please visit Mahboba’s Promise. Mahboba’s Promise is an Australian non-profit voluntary organisation dedicated to the women and children of Afghanistan. Mahboba’s Promise was founded by Mahboba Rawi, herself a refugee from Afghanistan, now an Australian citizen. They work with widows and children to improve education, offer vocational training and establish them as self sufficient. They have started schools for girls in areas where they had no educational opportunities. Primary health care in rural areas and provision of clean drinking water are among the many other projects undertaken over the last few years. If you, like me are disgusted by the events which have transpired please show some solidarity to the Islamic world.
In the interests of education I have posted the link video, I do not mean to offend… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmodVun16Q4
